We're a nonprofit that gives rides away for free. That makes every vehicle decision a math problem with a human answer: the less a vehicle costs to run, the more people get to work. Here's why our fleet is small, electric, and built around efficiency.

Right-Sized

Small, nimble, and never half-empty.

Traditional paratransit runs large vans on fixed routes, big vehicles that spend much of the day mostly empty, burning fuel to move air. We run the opposite model.

Our vehicles are compact five-seaters that go anywhere a car can go, down a rural driveway in Osage County, into a tight medical plaza, around a school pickup line. And they stay full because our dispatch software is built around pooling: it plans the entire day's routing, groups compatible riders into shared trips, and squeezes the most rides out of every mile and every hour of charge. A small vehicle running full beats a big vehicle running empty, every day of the week. That's not a compromise. It's the design.

Why Electric

The cheapest mile is the one that funds the next one.

Electric isn't a style choice for us. It's the arithmetic that makes free rides sustainable.

Our electric fleet

  • Charging: pennies per mile. Oklahoma has some of the lowest electricity rates in the country, and we charge overnight at the depot when off-peak rates drop lowest. A full charge, roughly 270 miles of range, costs about what two gallons of gas costs.
  • Maintenance: almost nothing. No oil changes, no transmission service, no timing belts, no spark plugs, no exhaust system. Tires, wiper fluid, and a cabin air filter are essentially the whole recurring list.
  • Brakes that last years longer. Regenerative braking slows the car by recapturing energy, so brake pads see a fraction of the wear, and the recaptured energy goes back into range.
  • Fewer moving parts, fewer breakdowns. An electric drivetrain has a tiny fraction of the components of a combustion engine. Less to service means less downtime, and downtime is missed rides.

A comparable gas vehicle

  • Fuel: roughly 3× the cost per mile. Charging typically runs 3–5 cents per mile against roughly 15 cents for gasoline, and gas prices swing while depot electricity stays steady and predictable.
  • Maintenance: a standing appointment. Federal fleet data puts gas vehicle maintenance around 10 cents per mile against about 6 for electric, oil, filters, belts, plugs, transmission, exhaust, on a schedule forever.
  • More wear, more often. Conventional brakes carry the whole job of stopping the car and wear accordingly.
  • Thousands of parts that can fail. Every one of them is a potential day the vehicle isn't carrying riders.

Real-world range comfortably covers a full day of pooled routes across the Tulsa region on a single overnight depot charge, no midday fueling stops eating into ride hours.

Reliability

The lowest-maintenance vehicles we could find

Software updates arrive over the air instead of at a service bay. Diagnostics run remotely. The service the vehicle does need is minimal and schedulable around ride hours, so maintenance never costs a rider a trip to work.

Safety

Top safety ratings, standard

Active collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, and top crash-test performance come standard, not as option packages. We carry people who trust us completely. The vehicle should deserve that trust too.

Stewardship

Zero emissions, stronger funding

Zero-emission vehicles are cleaner for the communities we drive through, and federal transit programs offer stronger cost-sharing for clean-air vehicles, meaning donor and grant dollars stretch further on an electric fleet.

The plan is two vehicles: a Model Y as the everyday workhorse for pooled rides, and a wrapped Cybertruck for routes with equipment to carry, both wearing the mission on the outside and funded to serve it on the inside.

Quiet, clean, comfortable, and modern. Our riders spent years losing things, the license, the spontaneity, the independence. The ride that gives some of it back shouldn't feel like a consolation prize.

Why self-driving technology matters to this community

Tesla vehicles ship with the hardware for Full Self-Driving, supervised driver-assistance software that is steadily learning to handle more of the driving task on its own. To most people, that's a neat feature. To someone who lost their license to vision loss, it's something else entirely: the first real glimpse of a future where a car needs no driver at all, and independence doesn't depend on anyone else's schedule.

Let us be clear about today: our rides are driven by people. A trained human driver operates every Foundation vehicle, and self-driving technology plays no role in how our service works. But as this technology matures, we plan to use our fleet for something simpler: demonstrations. Letting members of the low vision community sit in a vehicle and watch it navigate, signal, and park itself, and feel, maybe for the first time since the license went away, that the road back to independence is being built.

That future isn't here yet. But for a community that has spent generations being told to wait for someone else's help, watching it arrive matters.
